The following is a press release from the Rockford Riverhawks’ website.
July 18, 2007 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Three pitchers are involved in separate transactions announced Wednesday by the Rockford RiverHawks.
The team acquired pitcher Vinnie Rizzi from the Rome Coppers of the independent New York State League in exchange for a player to be named later. In addition, the RiverHawks sent pitcher Dane Towery to the 14-day disabled list and released pitcher Luke Hagerty from the DL on Wednesday.
Statistics from the first-year NYSL were not available.
Towery partially separated his right shoulder last Friday. Towery came out of retirement last month and is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in six relief appearances for Rockford.
Hagerty, the Chicago Cubs’ sandwich pick between the first and second rounds of the 2002 draft, had no record and a 13.50 ERA in two appearances with the RiverHawks. Hagerty had been on the DL since July 5 because of patella tendonitis in his right knee.

1The mascot:
He/she/it provides comic relief at the games, and is a powerful link between small children and the team. There is no more lasting impression on a child than a visit up close and personal with a warm fuzzy creature. More than anything, it’s what a child remembers from a trip to a game.
Understand that kids under 10 really don’t connect all that well to the game being played.
Mascots are also a good way for the team to reach out to the community when the team isn’t in town or in the off-season. Most if not all mascots are available for parties, school events or special guests at festivals or parades.
At U.S. Steel Yard, I hear more kids go beaming back to their parents: “Guess who I saw?” they gloat. “It was Rusty!”
Rusty the RailCat also has a pal Rascal and they take turns entertaining the fans.
I’ve seen Jammer in action. His antics with his power squirt gun will keep you busy! He possesses almost no characteristics that connect him to the JackHammers nickname, but his entrance before the games is a well-known ritual. Joliet also has another mascot that pops up late in the game … the Rally Donkey. Not much going on with that critter. I think they’d be wise to rethink its role.

2Three Northern League guys worth watching if they come to your town.
1. Juan Diaz, Joliet
2. Darryl Brinkley, Calgary
3. Josh Habel, Gary-SS (unless Willie Glen is pitching)
All are worth the price of admission.
Team to beat is still Fargo-Moorhead, very talented, experienced and well-managed. These guys gnaw you to death!
